Another "effect" of this deep discounting, for me at least, is I now regret buying Applecare for my iPad1. Only adds one year of warranty (not 2 years like computers) and increased my investment by $80. I figured it would give me a edge in resale but looks like resale for my $910 iPad has dropped way down.

Most likely I'll sell it six months from now and just wait and see what's happening a year from now. Truth be told I'm disappointed in how hard iOS makes exchanging files between applications, really makes doing work harder than it could be. Good for surfing, news, and entertainment, but not for the way I like to work.

Just picking a couple posts here to illustrate that it helps if you are looking for something that is at all plausible.

    Its quite simple

    -A 15" version
-with larger battery capacity (5 hours heavy usage instead of 3)
    -2 USB 3.0 ports
-and a built in 4G internet connection.

Then the MBA would be unbeatable.

Sorry, but a 15" MacBook Air would confuse the market too much - you're going to have to wait for the lines to merge in a year or two on that one. Already the 11.6" MBA is being referred to as the true expression of what a MBA is - sacrifice almost everything to the gods of Small and Light. A 15" would be an anachronism. Your larger battery will also have to wait for the likely MBP/MBA merger.

USB3 won't appear on an Apple product until Intel integrates it into their chipset, and that won't happen until Ivy Bridge. Thunderbolt is a given, however, and adapters will give you access to USB3 devices and bandwidth.

I suspect that Apple will point you towards an iPad if integrated 3G/4G is something you can't live without - they can justify producing extra SKUs for multiple carriers in an iPad-sized market, but not for the much smaller MBA market.

There have been many intel gpu based machine that had 1600x900 res displays, like the C2D Vaio Z or some of the offerings from Lenovo. I don't see why apple can't give such a res with to the 11.6in MBA with a 350nit display and wide color gamut. Then just add and SD card slot, make the usb ports 3.0 and a maybe even add a thunderbolt port and I'd be the first in line to get one.

There are already people complaining about difficulty reading from an 11.6" MBA screen, so higher resolution seems like a non-starter until they can get much higher-res screens in production (think 2x current res) that will allow them to scale screen elements to keep UI controls at the current size while giving higher user data resolution. Also, given the market that the MBA is selling to (mostly general-use, with low weight the overwhelming concern), Apple is unlikely to source a higher-gamut (and higher-priced) screen when most of the market doesn't even know what 'gamut' means.

So with our media do you believe that you hear everything that goes on?

I'm sure that a 3rd party adaptor will appear to connect an iPod dock connector to whatever kind of connector the Zune ends up using...

Not legally ... Apple owns the patent to the iPod dock connector. Any commercial or retail use is strictly against Apple patents. Developers pay a small percentage to Apple for every product sold that uses the iPod dock connector. While it has been hacked and many home brew adapter guides have been on the internet, these items are also not for sale. So, I doubt we WILL see such an adapter.

Turn down the brightness. The HTC Touch pro could dim the leds. It used a capacitive bottom panel with buttons underneath, similar to the way that the Magic trackpads work. Maybe the whole bezel would be capacitive and the bottom portion would have an indent and a button, where you only go home with a firm press on the panel, and the home button lights up when you run your fingers over it?

Yeah i suppose so. It would be be cool, though its like the clicking when you type on a iPhone, its great when you first get one because its so 'iPhone' but after a text or two it goes off and never comes back on

I can most definitely believe this.

I've personally witnessed the rather dramatic decline in Apple quality control over the last year.

It's unlike ever before and very discouraging.

Give me a break... I've heard this claim over and over and over and over for more years than I care to admit. It's as if there was once upon a time Apple released perfect products without any glitches whatsoever, but now everything they release is plagued with problems.

It's a fact... nearly every product line Apple has ever released has had its hiccups, whether it's overheating computers, faulty logic boards, problems with displays, adhesives etc etc.

You haven't witnessed any sort of dramatic decline in Apple's QC... you just like to believe that you have.

The Laffer Curve is often referenced, but you're correct about it's actual meaning. Some conservatives have taken the Curve to mean that lowering taxes will always bring about more revenue. Something this article is trying to address.
Thing about the Laffer curve is that there was/is no research or data to back it up. Arthur Laffer pulled it out of a dark place and scribbled it down on a cocktail napkin. Its actual shape may have no actual correlation to the smooth bell we always see, it is all fiction because no one has tried to demonstrate its validity or accuracy.
In the short-term, lowering taxes just takes money from the state purse and does not drive new economic development. In the mid-term and long-term, lower taxes may encourage growth, but there's not a direct connection between taxation and economic development.

I believe I have seen it suggested somewhere that raising taxes puts pressure on business, which may have the effect of stimulating growth by forcing the businesses to make up the lost revenue (ramping up). What effect government policy has on the economy is not clear because the economy is made up of a mass of Brownian particles that move in unpredictable and befuddling ways. And the factors that affect macroeconomics are themselves in constant flux, so the thing that (seemed to) work last time could have a disastrous impact next time around.

But the issue that troubles me is growth. The health of the economy is always measured by the GDP growth rate: the higher the better. That seems like folly, and history seems to support that. The more vodka, the worse the hangover. The faster you drive, the worse the crash. But even that analogy fails, because economic growth is a multi-faceted sum that can look good but not actually be reflecting positive change if the gains are not in areas that lead to ongoing stability and progress.

I would like some help with creating an animated global nav. using flash. I looked around on google for a while and didn't find anything this specific. Anyone have a flash project they could send me so I could take a look at how you put it together? I am trying to create invisible buttons over a movie clip of the animation, but no luck so far. I can't figure out how to get a movie into the button? I am probably doing this all wrong, the provided tutorials only cover very basic things, already read them. I am familiar with the program because I have taken a course on after effects and illustrator. The programs have lots in common (AE&Illustrator vs. Flash). If you have any good tutorials on this thats cool too.

    thanks in advance

    Cory

Edit: Attached is just a mock up to give you an idea of what I want. I exported a low quality GIF. Click on it to view the looping animation.

Wow, that bar-b-q at Bill's place panned out. Didn't expect a talk over a few beers and ribs over how to manage over 100 million users in a data center would come to something. At least no blood sucking head hunter got a commission on this one and he got a better signing bonus. Welcome to the club!

Honestly, if they offered an 8GB RAM option, I'd be sorely tempted to go from my current 2009 i7 iMac and 11.6" 4GB MBA to a maxed-out 13" SB MBA + 27" monitor. I would probably also have to move from my current FW800 OWC RAID to something with Thunderbolt, since I'd need something that could daisy-chain with the monitor.

I know that I would lose the top-end performance of the iMac, but it would be worth it to jump to a truly next-generation, all solid state laptop. I need the RAM to run Aperture and Photoshop CS5 together effectively, but I think I could live with everything else. I'd really love to get down to one computer that is decent when hooked up to a 27" monitor, and also very portable for the limited traveling that I do. The C2D MBA is fine for my travel needs, but not good enough for my day-to-day use at home.

I could go with a 15" MacBook Pro, but I really prefer the forward-looking MBA design and weight, and the price is more attractive on the MBA once you start looking at SSD options in the MBP.

Do I think they'll offer the 8GB option this year? I suspect not, but we may then see it in 2012.

While I agree the U.S. makers have a large share of the domestic market for pickups etc in the long term they are up against it the Japanese,Australian and to a smaller extent South African manufacturers turn out a much better quality product.I would think the only way for the U.S. manufacturers to survive is by partnering the leading overseas producers and use their technology.

I hope in the long term, US companies partner with many other companies. Yes, it's true foreign companies are ahead, but not that far ahead, imho.

A lot of people blame some of the areas surrounding Detroit's auto industry and areas around Michigan and neighboring states with the decrease in American auto quality and hard times that hit. While this is true to an extent, a large part of the entire region's economic hardship goes back before the 1980s when there was very little GOP support for the farmers in those states.

Even when Ronald Reagan and both Bushes were largely popular almost everywhere else and could find strongholds in nearly every state, the party didn't get the votes in Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio up to where the party expected.

Too many people blame America for making bad cars and thus directly affecting that big section of the Midwest, but by the 1990s the American cars were not really that bad but a lot of the other economies didn't recover. It was far more for the lack of support for farmers there from one of the two major parties.

It's far too much for any single link, or book to show why that section of the Midwest has been more democratic, but the auto industry and its decline is still a smaller segment of the Midwest's economy than agriculture.

By losing a lot of support from that industry in the northern Midwest pretty much cost the GOP the elections in 1976, 1992, 1996, and 2008. That being said, losing the majority of the South cost the democrats the election in 1980, 1984, 1988, 2000, and 2004. It is a wise move for the president to support those states in the Midwest which are hurting and prop up both the auto industry and agriculture industries. If he fails to do so, he could lose to a Republican in 2012. There's no doubt California and New York with be blue states, and Texas and Utah will be red states, but Michigan/Wisconsin/Illinois/Ohio and maybe Indiana could be very close one way or the other.
